The Cherryland Electric Cooperative board member election which takes place in May, has spurred a campaign to expose transparency and environmental issues at the co-op.
One of the new board member candidates, Traverse City resident Maureen Charbonneau, along with the advocacy website, Co-OpConversations.org, have created an informative video to shed light on plans that will increase electric rates and harm the environment. The video, Cherryland Electric: Getting Back on Track, also available on YouTube encourages Cherryland members to vote in the upcoming board member election. Ballots are available in the May issue of Country Lines Magazine, the official publication of the co-op.
In MWTHA's role as stewards of the environment, we encourage Cherryland members to watch the video, and then vote in the upcoming election. Or if you know a Cherryland Electric Co-Op customer, please forward this link.

The Traverse Bay Chapter of the Michigan Wild Turkey Hunters Association winter survival wild turkey feeding program will begin distribution of shelled corn on December 19, 2009 from 9 a.m. until noon at Gruler's Feed Supply on US 31 south of Charlevoix and at Ellsworth Farmer's Exchange in Gaylord.
Distribution will take place every other Saturday at the same time at these locations after December 19 until spring snow melt or an exhaustion of chapter feeding funds, whichever occurs first.
The Traverse Bay Chapter of the MWTHA adopted a stretch of highway M-66 between County Road 620 and Bundy Hill Road in Antrim County. This is a known wild turkey area where there are several feeding locations.
Our first pick up was in September, our next is in April 2010 prior to the start of the 2010 wild turkey season, and we hope everyone will come out to join us and let travelers on M-66 know that MWTHA cares about our environment! If you're interested in participating in the spring cleanup, please contact Linda Gallagher.

State Senator John Gleason (D-Flushing) is seeking public comment on a bill that would force the DNR to sell forest land to a private developer. Now is the time to act in order to prevent this bill from passing, as time is of the essence.
As mentioned in our MWTHA poll, The Turkey Call, the Michigan Senate is now considering a bill (HB 5058) that would force the DNR to sell 475 acres of the AuSable State Forest to a private developer. The DNR is opposed to this type of deal, and if enacted, would set a dangerous precedent.
