Well, it’s been a while since the last newsletter because the virus has pretty much shut everything down.  However, last year’s winter feeding program still went on without a hitch, I’m glad to say. The North-Central Chapter wasn’t able to have its annual banquet, but did have a very successful 15-gun raffle.

In 2022, we are commemorating the over 25 years of the MWTHA’s existence in Michigan and the highly successful winter feeding program, originally founded by Mr. Jim Maturen.  Thank you, Sir!

At the last North-Central Chapter meeting, it was decided to go ahead at this time and have their 24thAnnual Banquet with all the games, prizes, raffles, auctions, and terrific dinner you have come to expect.  The banquet will be on March 5th, 2022, at the Church of the Nazarene on Grant Road in Clare, Michigan (see the banquet flier enclosed).

Someone on Facebook inquired if MWTHA endorsed a fall turkey hunting season in Michigan?  The short answer is yes! There are already fall turkey hunting seasons in many areas of the state; however, there is no fall turkey hunting season in the Clare, Michigan area, for example.  In areas like Clare that have a very healthy turkey population right now, I would say we could definitely support a fall season.  There used to be a fall season many years ago in the Clare area but then there were several very severe winters that wiped out the population pretty much.  Then the winter feeding program was instituted here with incredibly positive results.  Today the turkey population in this area is very strong.

I’m not up on too many of the other areas here up north, but the Baldwin area and north were also especially hard hit with winters.  Of, course, if your area is still an area of low turkey population a fall turkey hunting season doesn’t make a lot of sense.  When you good people read this please give me some feedback on your flocks.  Remember, the winter feeding program is a great way to help out the turkeys here in Michigan.  I don’t really see any other organization doing this.  MWTHA gives the feeders away free (NOTE: these feeders have traditionally been the only DNR approved turkey feeder in Michigan).  You can also get the corn for the feeder free through the North-Central Chapter if you are a member (we don’t deliver).  The feeding program starts well after the snow has settled in and continues until around March.  This gets the turkeys through the winter which is the point.

If your turkeys need help in your area and you want to start a chapter, let me know, and I’ll send you the info.
