depending on the severity of winter, covers an area from southern Isabella county north to Roscommon county and
eastward to Lake Huron. Although some of these areas are beyond our chapter boundaries, there is no one else to step up and help the birds. Our chapter is extremely proud that our success has allowed us to meet the challenge and we are grateful to our members for investing in the future of the Wild Turkeys of Michigan.
Another milestone was reached in 2003 with establishment of the Abigail Mae Dent Memorial Wildlife Scholarship in partnership with Mid-Michigan Community College. It provides $500 for tuition per year for student in the Fisheries and Wildlife Management programs. This years scholarship has been awarded to Katie Knoph of Marion.
The future of wildlife conservation and outdoor sports such as hunting will hinge on the next generation of sportsmen and women. We encourage everyone to include your children, grandchildren, your friends and neighbor’s children in hunting. If everyone would set a goal of getting at least one youth exposed to hunting it would go a long way of insuring the future of the hunting tradition.
It was in that spirit that we held our 2nd annual Youth Pheasant Hunt this past October at Marsh Farms near Evart. The event was attended by youth members of MWTHA from our chapter between 12-17 years of age with a valid hunter safety certificate. The day began with safety instructions and safe practices for field hunting with dogs. The hands on portion kicked off with clay targets. Some of the kids already had some good shooting skills and the others were hitting their flying targets by the end of the session. Finally we moved to the fields where the tall grass had been stocked with hard flying rooster pheasants. All of the youth hunters had lots of shooting and most of the birds ended up in the game bag. After the hunt the youngsters were instructed on how to clean and prepare the birds for the table. Our Chapter is dedicated to actively getting kids involved and this is what this event is all about.
