For the first time in many years, the Traverse Bay Chapter did not hold a spring workshop due to declining attendance the past few years, and instead considered events like a fall golf outing and fund raising dinner. Plans remain in place to hold a raffle this year to bolster our bank account.

After several years of R and R, longtime chapter president Rick Riley, was once again elected president of the group last spring. Although he accepted the position, Rick wasn’t even present during the election, as he and his wife Ruth, our chapter treasurer, were on the East Coast with their daughter and their brand new twin grandsons!

Despite the much lower than normal number of birds, and the horrible weather of last spring, many Area J spring turkey hunters did have a successful season, although many hunters reported hearing and seeing far fewer birds.

The Traverse Bay Chapter is again encouraging everyone to try trapping this fall-a great part-time hobby and very helpful in reducing predator populations of all types.

Our monthly meetings will get started for the winter soon, for more information, give Rick Riley a call at 231-549-2705.

We’d also like to congratulate Jim Maturen, who recently received the 2011 Conservationist Award from the Mecosta and Lake-Osceola Conservation Districts. We can’t think of anyone more deserving. Congratulations, Jim!

Have a great fall!
